Tired of Being Exhausted

Jun 23, 2021

Seasons 2, Episode 25

Summary:

“Why be tired of being exhausted when instead you could be tired of being so excited? Doesn’t the latter sound better?” Michael Kithcart

Aren’t you so over feeling exhausted in your bones AND in your mind? Me, too. I recently went against all the things I coach and paid the price. Remember the gap between knowing and doing? Yeah, I fell into that chasm and if you’re anything like me, chances are good you’ve been there, too. Luckily there are ways out of the overwhelm and ways to get back to being excited about life. I kept this episode short so you can quickly hear one thing that you want to try and put it into action immediately…and then tell me how much better you feel. Seriously. This episode contains “one way” in five areas you can add a little pep into your day. Try one and let me know in the comment section how it helped you.

Michael Kithcart:

Hello, I'm Michael Kithcart. I'm a high performance leadership coach and the creator of the Wynning Your Way framework.

Welcome to the Champions of RISK podcast where we examine the many aspects of risk so we can all face uncertainty with more courage, confidence and humor together. And today we're going to add energy, because: Are you tired of feeling exhausted?

Yeah, like, really, aren't you just kind of over that, that sense of like, the overwhelm doesn't stop, you're on a continuous wheel, hamster wheel of overwhelm. Don't you just want to get off that and start feeling more like yourself again, aren't you like, so over that feeling at the end of the day of just being worn out and fatigued? I know I am.

So we're gonna address being tired of being exhausted and find our way through this together. Because there are some ways that really can be helpful to all of us.

As we are entering the summer months, we want to be feeling full of life and have nice balance, be able to spend time outside and with our family and friends achieve some goals, but do it at a pace that's not like that breakneck pace that we maybe have been operating from from so long.

And instead, just really start feeling, like I said, more like ourselves feeling whole again. Now, if you haven't been feeling this way at all, like kudos to you, tell us your secrets, because I coach on this stuff all the time.

And I have been feeling it lately, I just got off a huge project for my business, a huge client project, Plus, you know, all the other things that are going on personally and professionally.

And I am feeling like my feet are in the mud.

Like, it's taking a lot of energy for me to keep moving forward, I'm not able to do it at the pace that I'm accustomed to.

And it bugs the crap out of me, you know what I mean?

So, if you're feeling that way, too, let's talk about some things that we can do. To turn this around. I was thinking about it.

Because here's the- I mean, I'll just get real. I have all the tools, I coach others how to get out of their own exhaustion. And I don't always apply the stuff that I coach around. Yeah, like, don't tell anybody, but it's, it's true.

So I'm thinking, I'm doing this podcast for myself as much as I'm doing it for you. And I wanted to just think about one thing in a couple of key areas that if we all just did consistently, would actually pull us out of that fatigue, and feeling completely worn out, it would start getting us more energized and moving forward in the areas that we wanted to. And guess what, they're all super easy things that we can do.

So here's one thing that we can monitor this whole thing's about 'we'. Okay, one thing that we can monitor, and that's how we are talking to ourselves.

Yeah. When was the last time you stopped down and took inventory of the thoughts that are going through your head? Are you being kind to yourself? What are you saying to yourself?

Would you say what you're saying to yourself to your best friend to your kid to your spouse? If not, and let me just tell you, I know statistically, like chances are really high that you're not talking to yourself very nicely.

This is one thing that we can shift, we have over 60,000 thoughts a day. That's what our brain produces. 95% of them are repetitive, 80% of those repetitive thoughts are negative. So when I say chances are high, you're not talking to yourself very kindly. It is statistically research based proven that that's not what's happening.

So if you just take the perspective of monitoring your thoughts, and paying attention to what you're saying to yourself, what you are thinking about, and what you think the outcomes are going to be for your situations and recognize that they probably are not serving you very well.

And the only thing to do in this case is to stop and acknowledge and pay attention. And when you notice that you are making, you're having a negative thought.

Just say I'm turning my attention over here and replace it with something that's more positive. It sounds ridiculous.

Sometimes, like, Oh, really Michael like, okay, so I'm just gonna say, Oh yeah, that was a that was a bad thought. Now I'm going to turn my attention over here and I'm going to think about lollipops and unicorns and sprinkles. Well, try it, and see what happens.

Because, Can you say lollipops, unicorns, and sprinkles? And not smile? Just try it. I don't; I just, I bet you can't. Okay. So that is one way that you can start getting out of exhaustion is pay attention to your thoughts and replace the negative thoughts with positive affirming, kinder, gentler thoughts.

Here's one thing that we can all monitor.

Okay, thoughts. The next one is one thing that we can increase. And that is the time that we spend resting.

And I'm not just talking about sleep, I'm talking about things that are rejuvenating are restful, where you can have a space where you don't have to solve a problem, or figure something out or make a decision, right.

So that could be taking a walk, reading a book, having just some nice conversation with people that you enjoy.

Statistically speaking, we are supposed to have 42% of our 24 hours in a day, dedicated to some form of rest, that does include sleeping, but it also represents 10 hours of the day.

So if you are thinking about this, like how many hours are you sleeping? How many hours are you playing and having fun? How many hours of the day, are you doing maybe something nice for yourself, or you're just cooling your jets?

Do you think on a consistent basis, it represents 10 hours a day? Let me tell you, if it's not on a day to day basis, it's okay.

But if you aren't consistently, then that 42% is going to come back and bite you in the butt at some point. So we want to address it now. So that is something that we can increase we can increase the hours of in a day that we dedicate toward relaxing, rejuvenating.

Okay, here's one thing that we can say to ourselves several times a day, that honestly is calming. It like resets the nervous system.

I don't know if that is factually true.

But it's how it feels to me when I say this phrase, and you're going to hear it and then I'm going to ask you to actually say it to yourself out loud. And then let me know if you just didn't feel like your shoulders come down for a second. If you didn't just like kind of calm, calm yourself a little bit.

Because this is is the phrase that writes my day.

Everything always has been is now and will always be fine.

Yeah, that's it.

Say it to yourself out loud, vocalize it, everything always has been is now and will always be fine. I felt good, didn't it? Here's one more thing that we can do.

And that's to breathe.

I mean, really breathe. As in take in a breath for five and hold it for five and release it for 10.

Breathing exercise actually energizes us. It a good breath cycle will refuel us and make us feel more alert and sharp. It's a great thing to do right before you go and present or you have a big meeting, or you're getting ready to tackle a project that's going to require a lot of brain work.

Breathe.

That's one more thing we can all do.

I guess I should say breathe better, or breathe more deeply.

But you get the idea. The one other thing that I'm going to add that can get us out of exhaustion is one thing that you can celebrate every single day. Have it be something different every day.

But every day, find a win. celebrate it, acknowledge it.

Hey, I did it. It may be some days it might just be like I got up. I completed one thing on my list. And that's all I got through, you know what?

That's a win.

Celebrate it.

High five.

Tell yourself how amazing you are.

Because it's something It absolutely is.

And I challenge anybody who thinks that they're not getting something done over the course of the day, or they don't have anything to celebrate.

But if you just take a moment, you can find it. You might think it's small right now.

But it's a win.

And when we are feeling exhausted, run down, worn out, beat up, beat down. Wondering, when is this going to end, we have to do little things that will perk us back up, that will keep us going. That will build momentum.

Celebration is a big one.

And it's a thing that is most often overlooked, especially by achievers, the do, do, doers. Yeah, I know who I'm talking to. I know my audience.

So I am really gonna encourage all of us to celebrate a little bit more, especially during the summer season.

That's it, I wanted to keep it really simple, because chances are, you're already overloaded, right? And so let's just keep it simple.

Be nice to yourself, replace mean thoughts with kind thoughts in your head. Get more hours in your day where you're resting, relaxing, rejuvenating, say the mantra. Everything always has been, is now and will always be fine.

Breathe. Breathe deeply. And just take four, four deep breaths, and celebrate.

That's it. I want to hear from you. Tell me doing those things? Are you starting? To see light at the end of the tunnel?

Are you starting to feel a little bit of a shift where you're getting a little more energized? You're starting to feel a little more fulfilled just a little bit a little bit. Keep it going. Because it will multiply it will amplify and soon.

Maybe we're gonna have a podcast about being tired about being so damn excited.

I don't know I would love, love; I look forward to that episode. But anyway, drop a comment or reach out to me send me an email. I'm at [email protected]. Tell me how this is working for you.
