Every year a group of us share what our word of the year is going to be and why it’s our word. The intention is to select one word that encapsulates what we most want out of the year. The idea it becomes our mantra, our reminder of what we want to create, experience, attract.
At the end of each year, we talk about how our word showed up throughout the year, ways it didn’t emulate what we wanted, ways it helped us along the way…and then we choose the next word for the new year (WOY).
I like to start thinking about my word in early December. Some years I’ve made a long list and slowly narrow it down. Other times it’s clear what I want more of in my life and that becomes the word. Freedom. Ease.

Twenty-three. There are twenty-three significant wins I’ve had in 2021. Some are small, personal accomplishments. Others are goals achieved. A couple were new learnings and there’s a smattering of progress points. None of which were really on the top of my mind until I took the time to make the list and created space to jog my memory.

Think back for a moment to your childhood. What were some of the consistent themes you heard about yourself from your family and teachers? What did they say about your personality, talent, potential? Without getting into a therapy session, chances are how you were described when you were younger is still within you. Did you bury it or is it still shining brightly?
Disruptive. That’s what I was. I talked a lot and loudly, asked a lot of questions, had a mind of my own and shared what was on it frequently. It carried throughout adulthood. I’ve caused disruption in workplaces that have made culture better, reorganized systems, and ousted me out of jobs. As a coach, I disrupt patterns and limiting beliefs. I love disruption. Not for the sake of being unruly, but for the sake of creating change and making things better. Sometimes with great success and at times epic failure.

For decades I wore the badge of high achiever with honor. I was exceptionally good at setting a goal, breaking it down, and pursuing it with persistence, tenacity, and sometime pure will. I was winning! And then I needed a months-long nap. After I re-energized, I’d ramp it all back up again for the next big thing I wanted to accomplish. I was rewarded for my results, praised for my hard work and commitment…and then was asked to do more. Which I did, because I had more energy than most, could do it better than most, was committed more than most. Sound familiar?
